Dear Ward 8 Residents:

Today, I called on Chairman Phil Mendelson to bring forth for nominations of both Howard University's Dr. Natalie Hopkinson and former DC First Lady Cora Masters Barry to the DC Commission on Arts and Humanities (CAH).

I called for fair consideration of their reappointment on CAH after Chairman Mendelson blocked the full Council’s ability to consider and reappoint Barry and Hopkinson in an attempt to be silenced for speaking up against the status quo, for standing in the gap for Black and Brown artist in the District of Columbia and exposing racial inequities.

The CAH has been criticized in the past for its seemingly unjust allocation of funds to Black artists and communities East of the River. We do not live in a city where will condone the suppression of Black women in any form.

I applaud the research of Dr. Hopkinson who analytical data as evidence of the disparities in the distribution of funds allotted for the arts in the District of Columbia. In her article, “The color of Art: Mapping white privilege in the nation’s capital,” she asks us “Are Black Washingtonians less artistic? Are they less innovative? Creative? Have they not contributed to the cultural fabric of this city? Are they less worthy?

I will always stand for equity. There is no reason to hold up the nominations of Dr. Hopkinson and Ms. Barry. Today, I voted yes to support both nominees. The final vote was in favor of the nominations with 11 yes; 1 no; 1present.

NOVEMBER LEGISLATION
The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) released body camera footage of an officer fatally shooting Ward 8 resident DeAndre Johnson while serving a temporary protection order on October 18th.

Councilmember Trayon White sent a letter to MPD Police Chief Robert J. Contee calling for an investigation into the incident and requesting all body-camera footage.
On November 2nd, Councilmembers Trayon White and Robert White co-authored an amendment:

"... to amend section 3902 of Title 24 of the District of Columbia Municipal Regulations to 14 provide access to body-worn camera footage of all law enforcement officers to 15 certain parties connected to a deceased subject depicted in the footage and require 16 that the name of each law enforcement officer involved in the incident be released 17 to certain parties."

Hundreds of Ward 8 residents participated in the event at Oxon Run Park for a safe way to experience Halloween.

Residents joined in the fun and had the option to ride a 5-mile or 10-mile route. We want to send a special thank you to MPD, ensuring riders were safe on the streets.


** Councilmember Trayon hosts a lunch with the seniors at Rountree Residences.

On October 29th, Councilmember Trayon White joined seniors at Rountree Residences for "pizza and policy." Councilmember Trayon White, Chief of Staff Wanda Lockridge, and his Constituent Services team joined the lunch to learn about improving seniors' experience in Ward 8. As always, the Office of Councilmember White was able to leave flower bouquets and plants to brighten up their day.

Employee volunteers at JPMorgan Chase planted 30 cherry blossom trees at Oxon Run Park in Southeast. The trees are expected to bloom in the spring. Diana Mayhew, president of the festival, said the park and its new trees will be part of the Blossom Kite Festival in 2022 on March 26, 2022. JPMorgan Chase has sponsored the National Cherry Blossom Festival for the past three years.

Last Friday, Karl Morrison — one of the 46 homeowners displaced from their properties at 1262 Talbert St. SE because of dire safety concerns — received the keys to his new two-bedroom apartment in Navy Yard.

A housing certificate offered by the city will cover the rent for his apartment, a monthly cost of $2,777, for up to one year.

Housing certificates are different from housing vouchers, according to DC officials. People with housing vouchers are not allowed to apply them toward units priced above the “rent reasonable” value, as determined by the DC Housing Authority ([link removed]) for each neighborhood. Renters who have housing certificates, however, may apply them to properties priced above the “rent reasonable” value while covering the difference on their own. People interviewed for this story used “voucher” and “certificate” interchangeably, as vouchers are often used as a general term for housing assistance.
