Friend,

Today marks one year since voters overwhelmingly passed Measure 110 and made Oregon the first state in the nation to decriminalize possession of all drugs and increase access to supportive health services.

Thanks to this groundbreaking law, at least 9,000 Oregonians have already avoided a drug possession arrest and more than $300 million in new funding has been secured for critical services across the state.

This is just the beginning of its far-reaching impact. Thousands more will be saved from these senseless arrests and the devastating lifelong consequences that can include the loss of employment to housing and more. And because communities of color in Oregon, like the rest of the country, have been unfairly targeted by police and disproportionately affected, it’s estimated there will be a 95% reduction in racial disparities in drug arrests.

Our political arm, Drug Policy Action, spearheaded this campaign and we’ve been working closely with the Health Justice Recovery Alliance to ensure the law is implemented immediately.

While the devastation of 50 years of cruel and counterproductive drug war policies can’t be erased overnight, by all metrics we hoped to achieve, and what voters asked for, we are going down the right path.

Our historic win in Oregon has shown that shifting away from criminalization to health-based approaches is possible. Now support for drug decriminalization among Americans is at an all-time high and a number of states and even Congress is considering legislation that would do just that: [link removed]

DPA is leading the campaigns to decriminalize drugs in D.C. and Congress and supporting similar efforts in other states.

We need to take advantage of the momentum our victory in Oregon created across the country. Help us do it by telling your Members of Congress to support the Drug Policy Reform Act to decriminalize drugs and invest in health services nationwide.

Thank you for making this historic step forward in Oregon possible. There’s a lot to celebrate today but our work is far from over. Please continue standing with us to build on our success as we fight to end the disastrous drug war everywhere.

With gratitude,
