New Yorkers showed up for a vision of a city that is far more just, far more equitable, and far more prepared for the future than the one we have today.

As your budget watchdog, pension fiduciary, and chief accountability officer, I’ll fight hard every day to build that city.

The job of the Comptroller is to make NYC government work better, confronting the challenges of today and tomorrow by working to improve services, build better-shared prosperity, and prepare our city to face risks down the line.

As I traveled across the city in recent days, from Southeast Queens to the Northwest Bronx, I heard from New Yorkers who are feeling deep anxieties about their future. We are still reeling from the pandemic, and facing a future with so much uncertainty. Those fears played out in the election results last night, as progressives, Democrats, and even voting rights reforms fell short on the ballot, from Virginia to Minneapolis to Buffalo.

But our job in the face of these fears – what Rebecca Solnit calls the “great contemporary task of becoming human” – is to put every ounce of energy we have into building a more inclusive future, open-eyed to the risks we face, but open-hearted in facing them together. That’s why it felt so powerful to stand on stage last night with Jumaane, Antonio, and Shahana. We can build a city where everyone feels at home.

So we’re getting right to work. Today I’m announcing our transition committee, a group of 40 civic, community and business leaders who will help inform our priorities, connect with stakeholders, and recruit a strong team to ensure we are ready to get to work tackling these challenges on Day 1. I’ll have a lot more to say in the coming weeks about how we’re getting ready, but for now, thank you again.
