New VAYD Asian and Pacific Islander Caucus
A message from the Chair of the API Caucus Jessica Sun:
Nice to e-meet you all! My name is Jessica Sun, and I'm the Chair of the newly formed VAYD Asian and Pacific Islander (API) Caucus. My ask today is that, if you haven't already done so, please send out the signup form for the new VAYD caucuses ([link removed]) to your chapters' members.
Thanks so much for your help as we grow the new caucuses! Feel free to read on for more of an intro about me. I look forward to getting to know you all in the near future.
VAYD API Caucus Chair: Jessica Sun
I'm a lifelong Virginian and a proud product of Fairfax County public schools. I've been volunteering locally for the past few years in various capacities and campaigns. As VAYD API Chair, I am looking forward to reaching out to and engaging all Virginia youth, especially young APIs.
I accepted this role because I want to work with and empower compassionate and hard-working folks who know that the status quo is not cutting it. As a young person, member of the LGBTQ+ and disability communities, 2nd gen Chinese American, and non-binary woman in tech, I aim to always bring my whole self as I seek to provide and listen to diverse perspectives.
Although it's certainly a fantastic step for VAYD to have an Asian and Pacific Islander Caucus, I want to acknowledge that we API are not at all a monolith either. Each API nationality has its own separate culture with systemic issues impacting each in different ways.
This year in March 2021, a shooting spree occurred at three spas in Atlanta and a wave of Asian hate swelled across our country. As a daughter of Chinese immigrants myself, there was one take in particular that resonated with me deeply that week. It was from community advocate Sarah Lee of the Asian Law Caucus, and was as follows: "In my grief this week, the only thing I'm holding onto is the possibility for Asian communities becoming expansive - for Asian elders, sex workers, for the deported and the incarcerated, for trans people, for our Muslim community and the poor and working class."
I believe everything is intersectional, and that we must unite our fight as we continue to bend the moral arc of the universe towards justice. I'm looking forward to working with you all as we actualize a more equitable future for all.
Cheers,
Jessica Sun (she/they)
API Caucus Chair

Get involved with YDA Mobilized
YDA is launching a new initiative: YDA Mobilized.
YDA Mobilized is a policy advocacy program geared towards taking action for legislation that would affect Millennials, Black and Brown folks, and other marginalized communities. We are currently asking for all those who are interested in mobilizing around policy to get involved: Sign Up Now ([link removed])
Right now with Democratic leadership in the White House and Congress, the place that we can make the biggest impact is in policy and legislation. We helped elect these folks into office, but we can hold them accountable to the promises they made. Young Democrats are the largest voting block in the country and our leadership needs to hear our voices! That’s why we are asking you to get involved with YDA Mobilized.
We are putting together a planning committee now to start planning for three separate actions: a green, yellow, and red action targeted towards the Biden Administration and Congress. If you would like to join the planning committee you can express interest through this sign up link.
Let’s get out there and let our elected officials know what we are fighting for!
In solidarity,
Amber Sherman
