When We All Vote

John,

The urgency of this moment is high, so we’ll be quick: Today, the Senate is voting on the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. We need you to call, email, or tweet at your senators and urge them to support this legislation NOW. It’ll only take 5 minutes, and it will make a huge difference in our fight for voting rights.

Just two weeks ago, we saw Senate Republicans use the filibuster to block progress on the Freedom to Vote Act and we expect we could see the same thing happen with this upcoming vote on the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. It’s important to note that voting rights legislation was overwhelmingly supported in the Senate not too long ago under President George W. Bush. In 2006, the Voting Rights Act was extended by a vote of 98-0 with 52 Republican senators voting for it. Because it’s now hard to see that path forward without meaningfully reforming or eliminating the filibuster, we need the Senate to act now in order to protect voting rights for generations to come.

Here’s why the John Lewis Voting Rights Act is so important and urgently needed:

In 2013, the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act of 1965, the landmark legislation that passed after Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., John Lewis, and other civil rights activists were brutalized when marching from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama to demand voting rights. The Court's decision let states across the country pass voter suppression laws that disproportionately impact Black, Brown, young people, and the disability community, making it harder for millions of people to cast their ballots.

This bill would restore and strengthen our freedom to vote by making sure that any changes to voting rules that discriminate against voter based on our race or background are federally reviewed, so we all have an equal say in our future and our rights are protected.

Undemocratic voter suppression bills are being written and signed into law all across the country. States are purging eligible voters from voter rolls, closing polling places, making it illegal to bring food and water to voters waiting in long lines, and implementing strict and unnecessary voter ID laws. They're doing whatever it takes to suppress the votes and voices of the American people -- that's why we must continue this fight.
