THIS MONTH AT
Hi
John,
,
As we enter November, we're eager to share some updates and reflections about our work to end child trafficking, and the ways you can continue supporting the mission...
Our inability as a society to see and believe men and boys can be sexually victimized is troubling. A story in the news this week is a reminder that men and boys are being victimized. And they are being ignored and dismissed far too often. This week, professional hockey player Kyle Beach spoke publicly about sexual assault allegations against a coach from the Chicago Blackhawks, Brad Aldrich. Our team commented on how men need to be acknowledged and supported after victimization — and why this matters for those working to end child trafficking.

A TikTok recently went viral that told an incorrect story about how car seats were being left out to lure and kidnap women for sex trafficking. Beyond damaging the credibility of the movement, the National Human Trafficking Hotline often experiences an increased number of erroneous calls that tie up their phone lines. Very few cases of human trafficking involve kidnapping and Love146 has never seen any of the traps described in these viral videos in our work with victims.

Love146's Director of Communications shares, "In school, when I was being trained to do advertising work, we were taught to highlight a pain point, and then provide the solution. All in a matter of seconds. Create an itch, and tell someone how to scratch it. Applied to social issues, this often looks like making audiences as uncomfortable as possible using the most intense and terrible details in a client’s life... This can seem effective at raising money in the short term, but we’re nonprofits, and money isn’t our bottom line." If this is intriguing, learn more about how Love146 handles heavy topics, being sensitive to an audience's individual issues through language.

With so many friends, colleagues, and family members to find gifts for, (and with shipping delays and shortages afoot), it can be a stressful time for finding a meaningful gift that your loved ones really want. But this year give a gift that truly will be life changing by choosing something from this Love146 gift catalog. Look out for the catalog via email, social media, and our website next week!
Love146 was featured in a Reuters fact check about rising human trafficking numbers. We have no way to know or say with any certainty that trafficking is at an all-time high. Still, we do know the problem is real, and Love146 has cared for thousands of victims — including new youth coming into our care each month. It is with humility over the past few years that we at Love146 have looked more closely at the problem of outdated or questionable estimates and trends being presented as hard facts. Misuse of information and statistics discredits the movement and doesn’t truly equip people to address trafficking in their own communities.

Our college leaders are incredibly important to our work. College is a crossroads where children are becoming adults. Many are independent for the first time, some are financially unstable, and ultimately, vulnerability to exploitation remains. Understanding the reality of trafficking, recognizing the signs, and knowing how to get help is critical for a younger generation. We are so proud and thankful of their work.
