Today is Election Day for many of our cities and small towns. Nothing is more American than the simple act of exercising our right to vote. It is our way of choosing who we will entrust with government power and influence. I urge you to vote for the best possible candidates who sincerely have the public interest at heart.

But I also want to have a conversation about elections. I’ve worked all around the world and have witnessed political parties and autocratic leaders undermine trust and integrity in voting. Democracy is not self-executing, elections do fail. Our freedom rests on leaders serving with care, respect, and honor for our foundational institutions.

Andy Harris voted against results in two states in a democratically and lawfully held election, not because there was evidence of fraud or wrongdoing, but because it was politically advantageous for him. He tried to nullify the decision of the voters and arbitrarily make his candidate the winner instead. Harris simply loves power more than our country. When the people we elect to uphold the Constitution put their political interests ahead of the sacred vote of the citizens, our very democracy is at risk.

We have the chance to defend this gift, to uphold democracy. I support the For the People Act (H.R.1) or any legislation aimed at securing and promoting the right to vote. Voting is the people’s right, not a privilege. We must protect the right for everyone who is eligible to vote, secure our elections from foreign interference, and stop corporate interests from controlling public policy.

Abraham Lincoln reminded us of our responsibility as citizens of the United States, to ensure that “government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.” Do your part today to make your voice heard, vote in your local election.
