Hi John,

A matriarch of the L pod of Southern Resident killer whales, a 47-year-old named Marina who mothered several calves, has gone missing and is presumed dead.

This population of orcas is now dangerously small — only 74 whales are left. We can't let these iconic marine mammals vanish forever.

Please help today with a gift to the Saving Life on Earth Fund. All donations will be matched through Dec. 31.

Guarding these whales' habitat and food supply is the best way to keep them from winking out.

That's why we're calling on Washington Gov. Jay Inslee to take immediate steps to halt all state-managed salmon fishing in Washington waters.

He also needs to prohibit all vessels from approaching the Southern Residents, especially where they forage for food.

Some of Marina's calves now have calves of their own. Studies have shown that the loss of a matriarch like her gravely diminishes their chance of survival.

But there is hope for these whales. A calf was born a few months ago, the first in its pod in two years.

Thanks to a lawsuit we filed in 2019, the federal government is considering limiting salmon fishing to help these whales survive.

And earlier this year the Center locked in new federal protection for the Southern Residents' coastal habitat, from the Canadian border down to California's Big Sur.

We can secure a future for these orcas, but only if we stay vigilant and press state and federal officials to act with greater urgency.

It's the same approach we're taking for wildlife everywhere. The heartbreaking extinction crisis could wipe out 1 million species in the coming decades.

We have to fight for the survival of every one of them.

Please help us with this lifesaving work for whales and other species. Your gift today to the Saving Life on Earth Fund will be matched.
