Dear Friend,

The past two years have affronted all of us with unprecedented challenges, but the pandemic has been particularly hard on writers and artists—the very people whose work will ultimately tell the story of our era. I’m heartened by all we’ve done at PEN America to try to mitigate their burdens so that they can continue to wrest meaning and illumination from even the bleakest times.

As a writer and former PEN America president, I’ve come to think of literature as the dream life of the surrounding culture; it affirms our humanity, our complexity, and our deep connection to one another. When you support PEN America, you support the practice of writing and the belief that literature matters vitally and fundamentally.

HELP US PROTECT THE FREEDOM TO WRITE

PEN America was founded by writers for writers—and readers—almost a century ago. From its inception, our organization has united writers in the shared belief that the written word is potent and precious, deserving of celebration and protection. In the nearly hundred years since, PEN America has upheld and built upon that core mission: to protect the freedom to write.

Will you celebrate writers alongside us, by helping us continue to protect the freedoms that make literary expression possible?

Enormous thanks for any help you can give.

Sending good wishes,

Jennifer Egan, PEN America
