John -- The USA Today Editorial Board got it right. The fate of our democracy currently rests in the hands of the U.S. Senate:
Among other provisions to protect voting rights, the Freedom to Vote Act would outlaw partisan gerrymandering of congressional districts. This would be crucial in invalidating many of the highly manipulated map proposals Republicans have been unveiling over the last few weeks, including the one Governor Abbott just signed in Texas.
It’s no surprise that not a single Senate Republican is willing to support this crucial legislation. They’ve seen what’s happened in Texas -- where GOP legislators are attempting to limit the voting power of people of color and almost totally eliminate competitive districts -- and they’re determined to give map manipulators in even more states cover to do the same.
Texas is a warning, John. If we let them, Republicans will craft highly manipulated maps with surgical precision in a desperate attempt to keep their hold on power. But the Senate has it within their power to pass the Freedom to Vote Act and safeguard our democracy -- with or without Republicans.
We’re currently funding an ad campaign in support of this critical voting rights legislation, and we have staff on the ground in key states who are working to fight back directly against manipulated maps. But in order to keep it up, we need to start November off strong.
