Today, the Supreme Court is hearing oral arguments about the legal challenges to Texas’ SB 8—the state’s vigilante-enforced ban on abortion.

This is a crucial moment in our movement’s history, and I want to be clear about the stakes: If the Court chooses to continue to let SB 8 remain in effect, anti-choice lawmakers across the country will likely launch into a frenzy trying to replicate the heinous law, drastically reducing abortion access.

Lawmakers in at least 12 states have already stated their support for copycat bans and the number could keep growing. Millions of people could lose access to abortion care.

With abortion rights and access on the line like never before, our leaders in the U.S. Senate must pass the Women’s Health Protection Act (WHPA), a bill that would protect the right to abortion throughout the United States. There is no time to waste—the Senate must pass this critical bill.

We know where the Supreme Court’s anti-choice supermajority stands. Not only do they have a record of hostility towards reproductive freedom, but they also already allowed Texas to effectively render Roe v. Wade meaningless in the state by allowing this cruel ban to go into effect on September 1st.

The harm that this ban on abortion is having on people in Texas cannot be overstated—and its impact is having a ripple effect across the country.

We need a permanent legislative solution. That solution is WHPA, which would safeguard the right to abortion throughout the country even if Roe falls. But the Senate has to hear from NARAL’s 2.5 million members.
