Gen-X
A U.S. Navy veteran and intersex activist has received the first gender-neutral passport in America.
Dana Zzyym, who identifies as non-binary and uses gender-neutral pronouns, said the new passport is “liberating.”
With an “X” designation, the symbol is meant to provide an option for people who do not identify as either male or female - often nonbinary, intersex, and gender-nonconforming people.
The State Department expects to offer the option more broadly next year following necessary computer system updates.
The U.S. joins at least 15 countries that already offer a third gender option on passports, including India, Argentina, the Netherlands, Canada, and Germany.
Should countries add a gender-neutral option for passports?
