October’s Lunch and Learns got us thinking about stories that have been purposefully obfuscated from us and history. Many more stories have been left untaught, and we will continue our learning journey in November. This month’s Lunch & Learns create opportunities to reflect on unexposed Black history in Maine and to learn about Indian Law and History in our state through a special event co-sponsored with the University of Maine School of Law and the law firms of Drummond Woodsum and Bernstein Shur.

Friday, November 5, 12-1 PM: The Forgotten History of African Americans in Castine, Maine

Until fairly recently, most people in Castine would have assumed that African Americans had never lived in town in any significant numbers. Their stories and names were definitely forgotten. But since May of 2020, the Castine Historical Society, a small non-profit museum, has been working to uncover the hidden and forgotten history of African Americans in their community. By reading town records and searching non-traditional sources, Castine residents have begun to uncover stories of the enslaved and free African Americans who lived, worked, and contributed to Castine. Join Lisa Simpson Lutts, Executive Director of the Castine Historical Society, to learn more!

Friday, November 19, 12-1:30 PM: The First Annual Indian Law and History Lecture at the University of Maine School of Law

The First Annual Indian Law and History Lecture, hosted by the University of Maine School of Law, will feature Matthew L.M. Fletcher, Professor of Michigan State School of Law, and Sherri Mitchell, attorney, author, and Executive Director of the Land Peace Foundation. The lecture moderator will be Donna Loring, author, broadcaster, and former Senior Advisor on Tribal Affairs to Governor Janet Mills. The purpose of the lecture is to provide attendees with a special opportunity to learn from experts about the field of federal Indian law as it applies in Maine and across the United States. A thirty-minute Q&A session will follow the lecture. Special thanks to Drummond Woodsum and Bernstein Shur for co-sponsoring this event.
