Friend — this is major, and it's moving quickly:
On Wednesday, Congress will vote on a series of bills to protect iconic public lands like the Grand Canyon from the administration's attempts to rip them open for fossil fuel extraction.
The Grand Canyon Centennial Protection Act (H.R. 1373), the Chaco Cultural Heritage Area Protection Act (H.R. 2181), and the Colorado Outdoor Recreation and Economy (CORE) Act (H.R. 823) would
permanently protect these areas from extractive development.
This is urgent. The Trump administration already has plans in the works to open up these areas to drilling and mining. Wednesday's votes could be our best chance to stop them.
We've only got 48 hours to swing key members of the House into supporting them.
We're not sure we have the votes.
This can't wait — we need your support, and we need it now. Donate to the League of Conservation Voters and every dollar will TRIPLE in impact to help us win this fight (even $5 is enough to make a difference)»
For millennia, Indigenous communities, including the Havasupai, Hualapai, Hopi, and Navajo Nation communities, have lived in and around the Grand Canyon. The Pueblo people — as well as their ancestors, the Chacoan people — have relied on the Chaco Canyon region for their way of life and cultural heritage.
Uranium mining and fossil fuel extraction around these National Parks would tear into land that is sacred to these communities and expose their water supply to toxic pollution. It's a horrifying thought — but we CAN block any chance of it happening if we can swing these votes on Wednesday.
That's where you come in.
This is a BIG fight. We're driving letters and calls to members who still haven't committed to a "yes" vote. We're pushing for more media coverage so the public knows what could happen to our treasured public lands if Congress doesn't block the Trump administration's dangerous attacks. And our team is on the ground on Capitol Hill
right now, doing all we can to ensure these three bills move forward.
But how hard we fight depends on what resources we have on hand — and to be honest, with all the other attacks we're responding to right now, this campaign doesn't have as much power behind it as it needs.
We have a plan to get these bills passed, and we can do a lot with a little. Now we just need you. Please, pitch in anything you can — even $5 helps — and it'll go straight to powering grassroots campaigns like this one. Remember, right now every $1 you give is worth $3!
Thank you, as always, for being a part of this fight.
Sincerely,
Gene Karpinski
