Nearly one year out from the midterm elections, we’re beginning to get a clear idea of what we’re up against in the effort to protect our House and Senate majorities.
This time around, it’s not just Donald Trump’s fundraising machine. Mitch McConnell, Kevin McCarthy, and the GOP’s wealthy donors are clearly willing to spend whatever it takes to end our Democratic majorities.
Last quarter, the GOP raised $25.8 million, giving them a $65 million cash-on-hand advantage . In addition, Republican-controlled state legislatures are passing voter suppression laws and gerrymandering districts to help GOP candidates win. They are trying to bend the rules rather than win over voters. It’s pathetic. But it could succeed and that would mean calamity.
After we lost seats in the House despite President Biden’s win last fall, we must shore up all our remaining incumbent Democrats. It’s going to be tough, but we can do it. We must also help new challengers win their races and build on our extremely narrow majority. There’s no margin for error. Absolutely none.
This grassroots team helped Democrats send President Biden to the White House and win the Senate majority by electing Senators Warnock and Ossoff. While the president’s party typically loses seats during the midterm elections, last year’s losses in the House mean we need to win back many of the seats we gained in 2018 that gave the Speaker’s gavel back to Nancy Pelosi.
Right now, expanding our House and Senate majorities is critical. Without that, we won’t be able to continue working on President Biden’s agenda beyond 2022. Delivering real change on behalf of our nation is the only effective counter to Donald Trump’s campaign in 2024. We have to deliver. We may not get another opportunity for decades otherwise.
