John,

I want to make sure you saw what an amazing first quarter we had. Thanks to you, we are showing we can win this!

It's hard to believe we're already approaching the end of the first month of our second quarter. It's even harder to believe that we only have one full quarter left before the primary on March 17th, 2020. So, we very much still need your support.

Why do we need to raise money now? We need to get my name out there as much as possible. Much of it will go into digital media ads, campaign literature, community events and, most of all, boots on the ground to canvass our district's neighborhoods. The more funds we raise, the more likely that we will win this fight for working people in OH-3.

On August 29, I sent an update saying “We’ve Got Momentum.” It was a bold thing to say just two months into a campaign, but the signs were there: volunteers signing up, voters excited about our platform, positive media coverage and a growing social media presence.

Then, we heard from The New York Times. They came to Columbus to cover the campaign following the end of our first quarter. This line from the article pretty much sums up their observation:

“There are some signs her strategy is working.”

Pretty incredible. As you know, our strategy is straight-forward. We’re everywhere, every single day, we’re knocking on doors, talking to Lyft drivers, attending community events, visiting small-business owners and even our HQ has turned into a community space. The message is clear, the people I grew up with understand that it’s time for new, bold leadership in Congress.

Just read what Mr. Copeland, a retired principal, said to The New York Times, “he was a personal friend of Ms. Beatty from “way back,” but that wouldn’t cement his vote. We’re in a bad state of affairs. When we’re looking at elections and who we’re going to be sending to Congress and that sort of thing, we’re probably in a position where good friends and all that kind of stuff is going to go by the wayside.”

Our read on the NYT article is...we know the party machine isn’t with us, but it’s becoming more evident each day that the voters of the Third District are.

1. FUNDRAISING

Yep! Last quarter, we outraised our opponent by nearly $100,000 “without a dime of PAC money!” We also outperformed the other side by every single metric. Here’s the breakdown:

Topline:                  $333,000 vs. $247,000
Individual Donors: 2,670 vs. 169
Average Donation: $85 vs. $850
Corporate PACs:    $0 vs. $163,000
But the metric that matters to me most? We received donations from 90% of the zip codes that make up the district. My opponent received donations from 61%. I cannot overstate how much this means to me and the people who believe in our campaign. This is a true testament of how much support we have from real people who demand progressive policies here in Central Ohio.

2. MEDIA

At this point in the campaign, it’s all about name recognition. The more coverage we get, the more people learn about and get inspired by our campaign. So, it’s great to get all this positive national coverage to help spread the word throughout the district, especially since there are limited local outlets here. I thought the Teen Vogue piece in particular captured the energy we are generating among young people.

3. @MH4OH

Wow.

Susan. Sarandon. She was in Columbus and met with progressive students and working people and marched alongside us at the SEIU rally. It was very exciting to meet her at a progressive rally in Westerville (parts of Westerville are in OH-3). She later tweeted about our meeting, which went viral locally and a ton of people in OH-3 signed up to join the campaign. Thank you, Susan!

The next day I went on stage at Native Tongues--an open mic platform for local artists. These moments mean a lot not only to the campaign but also to the community. Many people I’m meeting have never heard directly from a candidate or politician. Here is a screenshot a supporter posted via Instagram Stories after the event:

We are going to be doing a lot more on social this quarter such as LIVE town-halls so please be sure to follow us: Twitter: @mh4oh, Instagram: @mh4oh  and Facebook: /mh4oh

 4. #MORGANIZING

Alex Rojas, Executive Director of Justice Democrats joined us at HQ last week. There are a lot of young people in OH-3 who admire what she’s done with the Justice Democrats. We’re still so grateful for JD’s endorsement--it took our race to the next level! That night we also announced scaling up our ground-game operation. To-date, we’ve engaged nearly 10,000 people in OH-3. We need to double that number before it gets really cold out. So we are now hosting a volunteer training / #Morganizing happy hour at HQ (139 E. Main St.) every Friday at 6pm so we can maximize how many voters we’re reaching every single day.

Now for my ask: PLEASE MATCH YOUR DONATION

In many ways, this fundraising quarter matters more than the first. They are already suggesting that what we did last quarter was an anomaly. More importantly, now that they know our grassroots “strategy is working,” they are going to go negative.

So I really, really need you to match your last donation so that we can be in a solid position before the holidays when it gets extremely hard to raise money.

Thank you again for your support,

Morgan
