This week, meet nature’s nightmare: Mindsuckers. “It is as astonishing as it is sad to watch a ladybug turn into a zombie,” writes Carl Zimmer. See up close how photographer and Nat Geo Explorer Anand Varma brings you face to face with these parasitic phenomena and other creepiness including an appropriately noirish—and delightful—short film.

In the image above, a male sheep crab (Loxorhynchus grandis) is infected by a parasitic barnacle. Below, the flatworm Ribeiroia ondatrae moves from a snail to a tadpole, forming cysts around a frog’s developing—and abnormal—legs. Halloween on South Beach: In recent years, Stephen Wilkes, photographer and Nat Geo Explorer, has been known for his sweeping, stitched-together one-of-a-kind images of momentous scenes. Last year, Wilkes used his Day to Night technique on a lighter event—Halloween on Miami’s South Beach. The overall composite image, above, was made from 180 photographs, less than a sixth of the 1,216 frames shot over 27 hours. Below, a detail of costumed revelers.

A mighty footprint: Sometimes it’s not the photo assignment but the stuff around it that creates an indelible image. That’s what attracted senior photo archivist Sara Manco to this nearly half-century-old photograph by Nat Geo’s George F. Mobley. He was searching for the tallest of the redwoods and sequoias when he found these footprints of a black bear and her cub, which he included in his 1964 National Geographic story. “I love the use of this image to show other life dependent on the forest,” Manco says.
