Haitians are suffering from the effects of political and economic turmoil, widespread violence, and the aftermath of the earthquake that rocked the country just over two months ago. Now, a severe fuel shortage adds another layer to this complex emergency. The fuel crisis has forced Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) to limit the number of patients at its trauma hospital in Tabarre, Port-au-Prince, and focus on treating life-threatening emergencies only.
“Without fuel, we can’t run our hospital,” said Dr. Kanouté Dialla, manager of the Tabarre facility. “We are doing our best to maintain our activities by adapting them from day to day, but this situation is unsustainable.” The shortage has also affected MSF’s emergency center in the capital’s Turgeau district and has made the transportation of staff much more difficult. We’re calling for rapid measures to get fuel to health facilities that need it.
