Familia,
Last weekend, Vice President Mike Pence, Texas Senator John Cornyn, and other Congressional leaders visited a border facility in Donna, Texas. News footage of their visit showed a shocking and gut-wrenching scene:
Almost 400 men were standing corralled together behind a chain-link fence. Many of them haven't been allowed to shower in more than a month. They were sleeping on a concrete floor with no cots, pillows, or blankets. It was reportedly "sweltering hot" and the "stench was horrendous".
It's hard to imagine any human being, let alone our elected leaders, not overflowing with empathy and sadness when faced with a situation like this, but Pence and Cornyn simply stared, arms-crossed, unable to even look these men in the eye.
The only way to make sense of all of this for me is to remember a phrase written by Adam Serwer in The Atlantic: The cruelty is the point.
And just this week, President Trump doubled down on his anti-immigrant policies by announcing a new policy that would effectively end asylum at the U.S.-Mexico border. Not only is Trump reversing decades of U.S. policy on how we treat refugees, but now he's putting lives at risk.
We have to stop these inhumane policies, and the most effective way of doing it -- the most effective way that we can begin healing the massive wounds this administration has inflicted on our country -- is to beat Republicans at the ballot box.
Battleground Texas has organizers on the ground, right now, registering as many new voters as possible to help make that happen, but we rely on donations from people like you to do this work. Can you chip in whatever you can, right now, to help fund our voter registration efforts?
