More than 60 organizations have come forward to support efforts to protect donor privacy

Dear John,
A couple of days ago, we wrote to you about an important case challenging California’s efforts to force nonprofits to disclose their donor information.
It’s not all that different from what happened to the NAACP in the 1950s.
Alabama tried to force the NAACP to turn over its membership lists. But the NAACP quickly realized that the information could be used by white supremacist groups to target their members.
Thankfully, the U.S. Supreme Court agreed. In NAACP v. Alabama, the High Court ruled against the state, acknowledging that releasing the private information of NAACP supporters would threaten their jobs and their physical safety.
Now fast forward to today.
The California Attorney General is requiring nonprofits from across the country to annually provide access to the names and addresses of all their major donors if they fundraise in the state.
In our toxic cultural climate, what could possibly go wrong?
The reality is the state has no honest need for this confidential information. And the California Attorney General’s Office has already displayed shocking negligence in handling it.
ADF is representing Thomas More Law Center (TMLC), a legal nonprofit that defends religious freedom, family values, and the sanctity of life, in a legal challenge against the California Attorney General’s Office.
We’ve already asked the U.S. Supreme Court to hear the case. And now, more than 60 organizations have come forward in support of these efforts to protect donor privacy.
This allied support is critical in presenting a strong argument to the High Court and convincing the Justices to hear the case.
But your faithful prayers and support are equally important. Your donations help provide a strong legal defense for TMLC as we work to protect the confidential information of generous people like you.
Because every American should be free to support causes they believe in without fear of harassment or intimidation.
