Dear John,
It almost goes without saying that Canada's federal finances are in very rough shape.
Even well before COVID, Justin Trudeau was spending more than any other Prime Minister in Canadian history.
And one of our recent studies found that the recent election only made matters worse.
Prior to the election, the federal government’s spending plan would result in per person spending of $12,695. However, the Liberals proposed ADDITIONAL spending that would bring per-person spending to $13,032. The NDP (the Liberals' likely governing partner) proposed EVEN HIGHER spending that would result in per person spending reaching $13,735.
To put those numbers into context – the per person spending during the global recession of 2009 was just $9,155.
That’s right, the MINIMUM level of per person spending expected in 2021-22 is 42% HIGHER than the global recession of 2009.
It’s also ~70% higher than it was at the PEAK of World War 2.
(And yes, those numbers are all inflation-adjusted!)
Simply put, these levels of per person spending are unprecedented in Canadian history.
The consequences of this will be felt by all of us. Since all this new spending is being financed by deficits and debt, even higher taxes are likely coming in the near future.
This study, like all the others we produce every week, received coverage all across the country. It reached millions of Canadians in newspapers, on the radio, and on social media.
That’s our mission here at the Fraser Institute: to move the needle on public discourse and give Canadians the cold hard numbers they need to hold their elected officials accountable!
As you can imagine, we do not accept government subsidies to do our research. Our entire operation relies on the support of people who appreciate our work – people like you.
If you are able to, please consider joining the ever-growing club of our most dedicated supporters by making a donation today [[link removed]].
