Next Tuesday we find out just how hard it’s going to be to hold onto the House and Senate in 2022, friend. All eyes are on Virginia as Republican Glenn Youngkin tries to take back the state for the first time in over a decade.

Youngkin is a Harvard-educated investment manager, but like most Republicans in 2021 he’s now running as a Trump acolyte. Not only has he already cast doubt on the integrity of Virginia’s election machines, Steve Bannon hosted a rally that Trump himself called into, and supporters pledged allegiance to a flag that was brought into the Capitol by insurrectionists on January 6th.

The worst part is, it’s working. Terry McAuliffe, the Democrat and former governor, had an almost 8 point lead at the beginning of August according to 538’s polling averages. Today the race is a tossup. Four years ago, Virginia shocked the nation when state Democrats blew all expectations out of the water and took back the national momentum heading into the 2018 midterms. Will they do the same in 2021?
