This October has been an unprecedented time for the labor movement in the United States — so much so that people are calling this moment "Striketober".
I stand in solidarity with all the brave people on the frontlines fighting for respect — whether that be from their employers or their government. We all deserve health care, dignity, and safety. It's past time to end the exploitation, and to give the power to the people.
It's critical that we have the backs of these folks on the frontlines and bring attention to this movement. So, I wanted to highlight two hunger strikes that are happening right now in New York and Washington, D.C. — and I'd appreciate it if you joined me in showing your solidarity. Thank you, John.
In New York City, a group of taxi medallion owners entered the ninth day of a hunger strike to draw attention to thousands of taxi drivers who are stuck with huge loans they're unable to pay off.
New York taxi drivers are the backbone and soul of this city. Their pain is ours. They shouldn't have to be on a hunger strike, and we must cancel their debt.
In Washington, D.C., five young people are on a hunger strike for our climate. Today is their ninth day outside of the White House, putting their bodies on the line for our future. Together, they are demanding that Democrats deliver on their elected climate commitments, and pass the first pieces of the Green New Deal for climate justice.
Climate change is not going to wait — and neither can we. The urgency of now cannot be understated.
