Dear John,

An October issue paper focuses on associations between firearm bans and
reductions in pregnancy-associated homicide.

Firearm Laws Reduce Homicide Of Pregnant And Postpartum Women

In the October issue of Health Affairs, Maeve Wallace and colleagues
investigate the association between

domestic violence-related firearm possession bans and relinquishment
laws, and reductions in pregnancy-associated homicide.

"States that had both prohibited firearm possession and required firearm
relinquishment by people convicted of a domestic violence-related
misdemeanor experienced 3.74 fewer deaths per 100,000 live births than
would have been expected in the absence of either law," they found.

"Further strengthening of domestic violence-related firearm regulations
and their enforcement should be an urgent priority," the authors
conclude.

of the budget reconciliation bill

extends enhanced Marketplace subsidies and closes the Medicaid coverage
gap through the end of 2025.

Vikram Mukherjee and coauthors argue that the COVID-19 pandemic has
increased urgency to adopt new ways for public and private health care
leaders to prepare for future outbreaks
.

David Brett-Major and coauthors discuss how adding influenza and other
respiratory diseases

to COVID-19 pandemic dashboards would provide the public and decision
makers with early warning that community respiratory prevention measures
require attention.

In a GrantWatch post, Jennie Riley describes an "unorthodox
collaboration
"
between health and conservation groups that led to an AmeriCorps pilot
program that trained and supported young people to be contact tracers
assisting the Navajo Nation's COVID-19 response.
