It’s pretty simple: you should be able to run for office as you are and with the name you're known by. But, in New York, that hasn’t always been the case. Just last year, the Board of Elections kicked Mary Jobaida and Moumita Ahmed, two Muslim women, off the ballot because their names didn’t exactly match the ones they registered to vote with. However, New York Governor Kathy Hochul recently signed a bill [[link removed]] that will “change that undemocratic practice once and for all [and help] candidates of color and immigrant candidates have equal access to the ballot as men with nicknames like ‘Marty,’ ‘Tony,’ or ‘Bill.’” We love to see it!

2021 might not be a presidential election year, but that doesn’t mean that Tuesday’s elections aren’t important. Because, if we know one thing here at NAL, it’s this: Local 👏 Elections 👏 Matter 👏
This Tuesday, we have the opportunity to make our voices heard; exercise our power to fight back against the hundreds of voter suppression and anti-LGBTQ+ bills introduced by state legislatures this year; gerrymandered maps; and attacks on reproductive rights; and vote in a new generation of bold, inclusive leaders. Our democracy is on the line again so let’s get it done, y’all. [[link removed]]

Did you know that in more than 200 years, the New Jersey legislature has never had an Asian American or Pacific Islander (AAPI) woman elected to serve?
Our President Ghida Dagher explains why in 19th News [[link removed]] :
"There are institutional barriers that have prevented women who are New Americans and women of color in general from running for office, especially obviously for those who are New Americans that are newer to the country."
Read more about how the tide is starting to turn in New Jersey and across the country—as a result of more New American candidates leaning into their authentic stories and experiences, running for office, and winning—in the 19th News. [[link removed]]
