🍂 OCTOBER 2021 NEWSLETTER 🍂

Mabuhay, John!

My name is Madison Villanueva—one of the Entrepreneurship Managers at Immigrants Rising. I joined the team in August, and I’m working with the rest of the Entrepreneurship Team to create income generation opportunities for immigrants through our SEED Grant program.

October is Filipino American History Month. It marks when the first Filipinos arrived on the coast of California in October 1587 and the birth of Larry Itliong, one of the manongs who organized the Delano Grape Strikes. At Immigrants Rising, I get to remember that we are not only remembering history, but we are writing history for those to come. I’m not only happy to work with two amazing Pinoys, Dean and my Ate Madeleine, but to be working to reach out to one of the largest undocumented Asian population, Filipinos.

Read on to find out what Immigrants Rising has been up to in October!

✍️ AB 540’s 20 Year Anniversary Continues ✍️

This month, we gathered 1,200 educators, students, legislators, administrators, and community members from across California to celebrate the successes created through AB 540, the landmark California law that opened up access to higher education for undocumented students. The conference does not mark the end of our advocacy, but it's only the beginning of this new exciting phase for creating more opportunities in higher education for undocumented students.

➡️Take action with us! Let's build on the momentum of the conference to advocate for the equitable implementation of AB 540 across California public colleges and universities.
