Big Pharma got a big win today when President Biden released a new framework for the Build Back Better Act that does not include using Medicare’s negotiating power to lower prescription drug prices. In fact, the proposal does nothing at all to address Big Pharma price-gouging or to add dental and vision benefits to Medicare.
While the new framework from the White House marks historic investments in childcare, home and community-based services, climate action, and preventing future pandemics, excising Medicare expansion and lowering drug prices leaves seniors out of the deal and breaks Democrats’ promises to the voters most likely to turn out in midterm elections.
Right now, corporate Democrats are pushing to hold a vote on the bipartisan infrastructure bill―the “BIF”―before finalizing the Build Back Better Act. Progressives must hold the line and insist that the bills remain linked, and that Build Back Better deliver for seniors by lowering drug prices and fully expanding Medicare to include hearing, dental and vision coverage.
