John,
Yesterday, President Biden released the framework for his Build Back Better plan, and because of the days, months, and years of organizing and work, it includes language relating to immigration. But, the details are still vague, and nothing is final. That’s why we’ve been organizing from the most eastern end of Long Island to the North Country to Buffalo, and one thing is clear—our state is united for citizenship.
In just the last week, partnering with our incredible member organizations, we’ve held nearly a dozen events in Syracuse, Ithaca, Buffalo, NYC, and beyond, calling on Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer to ensure a pathway to a green card and citizenship is in the budget reconciliation package that is being negotiated now! We have:
- Held a series of five vigils in honor of our immigrant communities with members and allies like Justice for Migrant Families and Access of WNY
- Delivered hundreds of postcards calling for citizenship to Senator Schumer’s Manhattan office
- Taught campaign workshops outside Senator Schumer’s Brooklyn home with our member NICE
- Hosted Dipaawali, the Hindu festival of lights, in front of Senator Schumer’s home with our member Adhikaar
- Marched through Peekskill to Senator Schumer’s office with Neighbors Link, Yonkers Sanctuary Movement and Community Resource Center
All across the state, it’s clear that New Yorkers are demanding nothing short of permanent protections for immigrants. Now, it’s time for Democratic leadership to take action and deliver a path to citizenship.
