October is LGBTQ history month, friend. It’s a time focused on honoring those who have come before us and renewing our commitment to push for full LGBTQ equality in every part of life.

Before I go any further, we have an urgent end-of-month deadline approaching in a few days. Will you rush a donation of $10 right now to help us reach our goal?

Every October, I think a lot about my heroes in the LGBTQ movement. People like Pauli Murray, a pioneering minister and civil rights attorney, and Bayard Rustin, a civil rights strategist and organizer, and Kathy Kozachenko, the first out person elected to office in the country.

And I think about the incredible LGBTQ youth that I get to work with across the South, middle and high schoolers who are coming out and fighting for their rights.

Every LGBTQ person in our country has experienced LGBTQ discrimination or bias in one way or another.

It is a big part of why I got involved in politics. Ultimately, this led to my wife Meghann and I launching marriage equality campaigns across the South.

From the start, I loved it -- the organizing, the campaigning. And I saw firsthand the power of changing laws and winning elections -- it led to changes that had an immediate impact on people’s lives. Like being able to marry the love of your life. Or being able to legally adopt your own child.

That’s why I ran for county commissioner -- where I have worked to expand access to early childhood education, respond to the opioid crisis, strengthen rural broadband access, and more.

And this is a big part of why I’m running for Congress. Because so much is at stake for people in Western NC and we need leadership that will deliver real change and results.

I want to work together with people across Western North Carolina to make our home the place we deserve. Where violence and extremism no longer divide us, but love and compassion unite us. Where no matter who you are and who you love, you are treated with dignity. Where every person has an equal chance to thrive.

I’m not your typical career politician, friend, and this is not your typical campaign. I’m running on the values of love, hope, and empathy to deliver real leadership to WNC.

We still have $9,803 left to raise before our end-of-month deadline expires. Will you chip in $10 or more to help us get there?

When we come together, there’s nothing we can’t do.
