Dear John,

We are heading towards winter now and there is no greater reminder than the awful rain we had this week. This has led to some very worrying times for people living in and around Hawick. I was relieved this morning when we got the news that the river was beginning to drop again. My thanks to the volunteers and various authorities who have been keeping people safe these last few days.

In Westminster, it has been another busy week with Rishi Sunak announcing his annual budget. I was also in Glasgow this week with the Scottish Affairs Committee investigating how preparations are going for COP26. The UK is hosting this global conference to find a global solution to climate change. It will be very challenging but I hope that global leaders are able to come to an agreement so that we can mitigate global warming as much as possible.

As ever, if I can be of help to you or someone you know, do please get in touch via the contact details below.

Kind regards.

Yours sincerely,

John

There is lots to cheer in this week's budget including the £2.2bn tax cut for the lowest paid and an extra £4.6bn for the Scottish Government to spend on our NHS, education and other public services.

We will soon hear if any groups from the Borders have been successful in applying for the UK Government's Community Renewal Fund too, which will strive to level up access to opportunities. You can find out more about the Budget ** here. ([link removed])

I was delighted to support the Menopause (Support and Services) Bill in Parliament today. This is the result of campaigning by Davina Mccall and Carolyn Harris MP, whose Private Members' Bill is progressing through Parliament at the moment.

When this Bill becomes law it will require a UK-wide, cross-Government strategy on menopause support and services to be published. This will help educate young people about the menopause, provide training for GPs on the best treatment options, and help promote better workplace policies to support women who are experiencing menopause.

Like many people, I was shocked and horrified about the murder of my colleague, Sir David Amess MP. He was a tremendous parliamentarian who will be greatly missed.

Due to the nature of his death, I have been advised by the Police and the security team at the House of Commons that I will need to alter the way in which I conduct advice surgeries.

I am determined to continue to hold them as they are a vital way of speaking with constituents. However, in future, my surgeries will have to be by appointment only.
