Friend,
For too many politicians, the word community is nothing more than a talking point.
To me, growing up in southwest Detroit, community is part of everything we seek to achieve. It’s how we stand up to corporate greed that is polluting our neighborhoods. It’s about ensuring a better life for our kids. It’s how we reach our goals―together.
Senator Bernie Sanders understands how, together, we can build the kind of future that we all deserve. That’s why I am proud to endorse his campaign for president. Click here to chip in to Bernie’s campaign for president today!
Yesterday, I had the pleasure of hosting Bernie on a tour of my community. We met with local housing justice advocates fighting for affordable housing. We spoke with leaders of a local food pantry, which provides meals for families and clean water for those who have suffered immoral water shutoffs. We visited the site of the 1932 Ford Hunger March, where striking autoworkers died in the fight to unionize the auto industry for fair wages and benefits. And we were able to show Bernie, firsthand, the pollution that our community is exposed to everyday, in the shadows of the Marathon Oil refinery.
Senator Sanders heard from community development experts and affordable housing advocates about the challenges that exist in our state―which has lost more Black homeownership than any state, and where many of our communities remain redlined and discriminated against. We talked about what affordability really means, and how to increase the supply of affordable, quality housing.
Last night, we came together with thousands in our Metro Detroit community at a rally at Cass Tech High School―a school that’s had its water supply turned off for being unsafe while it sits just blocks from the taxpayer-subsidized Little Caesars Arena.
When I heard Bernie speak, I was reminded of how, as a community we must fight for the future our children deserve―where our schools have the right to clean drinking water and literacy right now.
Bernie’s vision strikes at the heart of all that we seek to achieve. He understands that it’s not just about policies and about words. It’s about completely transforming the structures in place that are hurting our people and our communities.
That’s why I am proud to endorse Bernie Sanders for President of the United States. Amo Bernie (Uncle Bernie in Arabic), isn’t gonna sell us out to the corporate greed that controls our country. His vision is one where all of our children and our communities have the opportunity to thrive.
