Friend,
When young people elected Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, and Democratic majorities to both the House and Senate in 2020, they gave Democrats a mandate to make real, generational change.
Young Americans expected the leaders they elected to act and act quickly — on solving the climate crisis, reducing income inequality, and building an economy that works for ordinary people.
The Build Back Better Act framework announced by the White House today doesn’t go far enough to address the economic and climate crises facing our generation, but it’s a decent start.
Write to your members of Congress now and urge them to vote in favor of the Build Back Better Act and fully deliver on the framework outlined today.
Although Senators Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema cut major parts of President Biden’s policy agenda at the behest of corporate interests, it was pressure from grassroots activists like you that managed to secure wins on several major priorities, including:
- The largest investment in climate action in history, with $555 billion to decarbonize and promote clean energy
- Universal pre-K and new investments to ensure affordable child- and home-care for parents and caregivers
- An expansion of affordable health care to lower premiums and close the Medicaid coverage gap
- New investments in access to higher education, including at Historically Black Colleges & Universities, minority-serving institutions, and Tribal Colleges & Universities
- An extension of the Child Tax Credit for an additional year
- Immigration relief to keep families together and make the system more humane
- Unprecedented funding for affordable housing and rental assistance
We support the framework over the alternative of continued inaction, hardship, and lost opportunity for millions of struggling Americans. Congress should move swiftly to pass President Biden’s infrastructure package and the Build Back Better Act — and then recommit themselves to fulfilling the promises that inspired millions of young people to join our democratic process in 2020.
As negotiators work to turn this deal into written legislation, our members of Congress need to hear from us so everything in this framework remains in the final package. The Build Back Better Act will soon come to a vote in both chambers of Congress, so we can’t let up just yet.
Rest assured, we’ll continue to push for progress on what was left out of this deal. But time is running out and we can’t afford to let this moment pass us by.
Urge Congress to pass the Build Back Better Act and finally deliver results for working families.
Thank you,
NextGen America
