White House with 25 activists standing in front of it with Voting Rights Now signs.

This month, People For ramped up our civil disobedience campaign to demand that President Biden get the Senate to fix or nix the filibuster in order to protect our voting rights now. People For members, staff, and board members demonstrated at the White House, twice risking and getting arrested. On October 5, the “Democracy Five” spent the night in jail – including People For President Ben Jealous – and on October 19, twenty-five activists were arrested. And we’re not done yet.

We will keep going back until President Biden ensures that the Senate reforms or ends the filibuster to pass critical voting rights legislation without delay. Watch now to see People For in action, including board members Alyssa Milano, Rabbi David Saperstein, and Reverend Timothy McDonald!

We only have four days left to secure progressive wins in Virginia and make sure that Trumpist Glenn Youngkin doesn’t get into the governor’s mansion. People For has kicked our activity in-state into high gear, with both President Ben Jealous and board member Dolores Huerta hitting the pavement in the election’s final week.

To raise awareness about the high stakes of the election, People For hosted a live election briefing for supporters on the current state of the race, showcasing disturbing research from Right Wing Watch about what’s happening in-state, and how people can get involved nationwide to keep the former seat of the Confederacy blue. Alongside Jealous and Huerta, the event featured Virginia House Majority Leader Charniele Herring and other election experts. Watch now - and then share with your friends and family - to help spread the word about the importance of the 2021 Virginia election!

Negotiations on a federal police reform bill have collapsed because Congressional Republicans are willing to stand in the way of lifesaving changes to policing. It is time for state and local governments to take the lead in reimagining public safety.

And it is time for all of us to support local leaders who are willing to show leadership and take risks to make it happen. Last year, 100 young progressive candidates ran for office as part of a slate committed to ending police killings of unarmed civilians. Read on for more about this growing movement to reimagine public safety from the ground up!

Repairing the federal courts continues at a rapid pace. President Biden has had more lower federal court judges confirmed by mid-October than Donald Trump had at the end of his entire first year in office. And this week, the Senate confirmed voting rights expert Myrna Pérez to the prestigious Second Circuit, providing much needed professional diversity to the U.S. Appeals Court.

The administration’s accomplishments here cannot be overstated; it has been nearly half a century since we last had judges confirmed this quickly. But there are many more judicial vacancies that need to be filled as soon as possible, and a lot of damage being done by Trump’s judges that still needs to be undone. Read on for the current state of our fight to save our courts!

We want to extend a warm congratulations to People For board member Alyssa Milano on the publication of her new book this week! Just days after being arrested while standing up for voting rights, Milano published Sorry Not Sorry, a collection of personal essays.

From #MeToo to Melrose Place, Milano’s new book gives a gut-punch-level wake-up call in an era where the noise is a distraction from what really needs to happen, if we want to live in a better world. Make sure to check it out!
