U.S. beekeepers lost more than 40% of their honeybee populations between April 2019 and April 2020. With bees responsible for ONE of every FOUR bites of food that we eat, their loss could have a devastating effect on the food supply.
A class of pesticides called neonicotinoids (neonics) contributes to bee die-offs. Neonics impair bees’ natural defense systems, limit their reproductive success and hurt their chances of survival. But despite the vital role bees play in sustaining our food supply, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) allows the widespread use of these bee-killing pesticides.
Widely-used neonicotinoid pesticides cause nervous system problems in bees that stop them from pollinating and breeding. The EPA has a history of allowing the use of bee-killing pesticides, even though there is evidence they cause harm to both humans and bees. This dangerous stance means that not only will humans be eating, drinking and breathing pesticide poisons for years, but bee colonies will also continue to suffer.
Enough is enough. We need to stop this massive national bee die-off before it’s too late. The impact on our food system could be catastrophic.
At Food & Water Watch, we’re fighting hard to defend our bees – but we need you standing with us. We’re working to pass crucial bills to ban dangerous pesticides across the country, and with your help we’ll protect bees and the food supply we all depend on.
Food & Water Watch and its affiliated organization, Food & Water Action, are advocacy groups with a common mission to protect our food, water and climate.
