While it may seem like everything is held up in Congress, I like to be able to send you updates like this one, John:
On Tuesday, I watched with immense gratitude and pride as the House of Representatives passed the Family Violence Prevention and Services Improvement Act, a bipartisan bill I authored to prevent domestic and family violence, and keep women, children, and families across the country safe.
Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, we have seen an increase in domestic and family violence, as folks have been forced inside -- often within close proximity to abusers. In many ways, the pandemic has made the consequences of domestic and family violence worse than ever before. And at the same time, I had been hearing from advocates for years that the current level of funding was leaving too many gaps in our support systems.
The bill we just passed reauthorizes and expands that funding, with a focus on protecting survivors and preventing family and domestic violence. It means that the Department of Health and Human Services can better partner with state, local, and tribal organizations. And it will strengthen and update the National Domestic Violence Hotline.
By passing this bill, we can continue to provide stability and support to survivors across the country. We can ensure that women, children, and everyone who suffers domestic violence and abuse has access to the resources they need to rebuild their lives.
John, I will always stand up for Georgia families, and families across America. I was proud to see a bipartisan group of Representatives come together to pass the Family Violence Prevention and Services Improvement Act, and I will continue fighting to make sure that victims and families are protected.
I’m so glad to have you in this fight with me,
Lucy McBath
