As I travel across our state, I’m hearing from people who are worried about the failure of Washington to make progress and address the needs of North Carolinians on so many critical issues.

Right now, Republicans have weaponized an arcane procedural rule to block legislation the voters in our state and our nation support: the filibuster.

At the same time, our nation is confronting urgent, generational challenges like recovering from the pandemic, expanding access to affordable health care, addressing climate change, and reforming a broken criminal justice system. But time and again broadly popular, commonsense solutions that Americans support are blocked by threats of a filibuster.

It’s wrong. We must eliminate the filibuster.

I remember my mother and grandparents celebrating when the 1965 Voting Rights Act passed on a bipartisan vote — hoping that their children and grandchildren would never face the obstacles to voting that they did. But in today’s Senate, not a single Republican Senator has shown any willingness to vote for legislation to protect the right to vote.

In the face of attacks on fundamental rights like voting and reproductive freedom, Republicans universally oppose even debating overwhelmingly popular, commonsense solutions that would protect all of us.

We cannot wait as politicians obstruct efforts to safeguard our rights and do the work we elected them to Congress to do. The filibuster must go.
