John, it’s the end of the month, so you know what that means: I’m about to ask you to chip in before our campaign’s October fundraising deadline expires.
First, though, I want to explain why I’m running and why your contribution is so important.
I first knew I wanted to be a doctor after a personal health scare as a kid. I was hospitalized and at first they couldn’t figure out exactly what was wrong. My parents searched for a specialist but we didn’t have one where I grew up and it took a visiting doctor who, to my family’s great relief, was able to figure out the issue.
Even though I was just six years old, that experience made a real impression on me. It was then that I knew that I wanted to become a doctor, because the doctors I saw were problem solvers — they saw a problem they couldn’t work out and they kept working to identify it and solve it.
I was fortunate to get the help I needed, but early on I learned that barriers to health care including cost and lack of insurance stop so many people from receiving the medical treatment they need.
Back in 2009 before the Affordable Care Act, one of my patients was a 19-year-old pregnant woman who went into preterm labor at seven months. A serious, pre-existing heart condition kept her from getting health insurance, and like so many people, she simply couldn’t afford to pay for prenatal care out of pocket.
And I knew this was a real problem that couldn’t be solved in a doctor’s office — so I got to work and became an advocate who pushed to pass the Affordable Care Act and expand access to health care coverage for 23 million Americans.
All these years later, health care is still too difficult and expensive to access for too many, and access to safe and legal abortion is under attack. That’s why I’m running for U.S. Senate in Pennsylvania — to make sure everyone, no matter their ZIP code or income, has access to quality, affordable health care.
But first, I need your help to build a campaign with the resources to get there. With just a few days left until our end-of-month deadline, will you chip in any amount to help me flip this seat and make progress in the U.S. Senate?
