Dear Friends,

We started off the year full of excitement and with the hope that we might build a fairer, more equitable economy that works for everyone. Today, we got a little closer.

The newly announced Build Back Better plan will invigorate our economy; strengthen our care infrastructure by investing in child care, universal pre-K, and high-quality care for our aging population; and lift families out of poverty through the expansion of the Earned Income Tax Credit and investments in affordable housing and nutrition security.

We will also see significant investments aimed at curbing climate change and other efforts to close Medicaid coverage gaps and reduce premiums for millions of Americans.

There’s no doubt about it: This is a historic win for all of us. The plan and its investments are a down payment on our shared economic future and prosperity.

There’s still much work to be done. Unfortunately, in negotiating, paid sick and family medical leave fell out of the package. I am sure you will agree: This feels like a lost opportunity to ensure that all workers, regardless of their occupation or sector, can take time off to care for a loved one or for themselves when they are ill. We learned during the pandemic that paid sick leave was not a “nice to have,” but a necessity for families and the most vulnerable workers.

Don’t fret. The fight to secure paid sick leave, raise the minimum wage, and make permanent other provisions of the Build Back Better plan is far from over.

Let us take a moment to celebrate, then let’s roll up our sleeves and get back to work. I am ready to strategize, mobilize, and work alongside you to make our vision of a just economy possible.

Let’s do this.
