Elections next week have an outsized impact on our daily lives | Email not displaying correctly? View it in your browser [link removed]

Hello,

There’s a strong chance you’ll be reading this note in the same setting where I wrote it: in a home office instead of an office building. The pandemic continues to affect all of our lives in ways large and small, and one of those impacts has been to cast a spotlight on state and local leaders helming the response. Even as the way we think about politics has become more nationalized, officials below the federal level have become responsible for our health and daily lives in ways we couldn’t have imagined before COVID-19.

Next week, Americans will have the opportunity to cast a ballot for those mayors, councilors, board members, and other leaders on election day. Confirm your polling location, research the names on the ballot, and make a plan to vote in moments using BallotReady → [link removed]

“Off-year” elections historically have had just a fraction of the voter turnout of the preceding presidential year, but they’re no less important. On the contrary, the last 20 months have shown that local government can play the most important role in times of crisis. And through our work at New Politics, we’ve connected with inspiring servant leaders who are stepping up to meet the moment by running for office. The candidates we’ve endorsed who are on the ballot next week include leaders like Lourdes Barroso de Padilla, a City Year alum who could become the first Latina to serve on the Columbus, Ohio, City Council, and Lisa Smith, an Air Force veteran who has dedicated her career in and out of uniform serving others and is now running for City Council in Arvada, Colorado.

Even as turnout drops for these off-year elections, the opportunity to make an impact on the race with your volunteer hours is higher than ever. Local elections are frequently decided by hundreds of votes — or less — meaning that a few hours phone banking could be the difference between a win and a loss.
