Hey there --

You’ve probably heard a lot about the Facebook Papers in the news.

The Facebook Papers are a massive set of Facebook internal documents that whistleblower Frances Haugen provided to Congress and news outlets around the world. This unprecedented release of internal research and communications demonstrates Facebook’s willful neglect when it comes to the proliferation of disinformation, extremism, and hate on its platforms. Some highlights:

* Facebook has tiers for how it prioritizes its resources to countries across the world. Despite a civil war, Ethiopia has little attention from the company in the third tier. [[link removed]]

* Mark Zuckerberg stopped a Spanish language edition of Facebook’s voting information center on WhatsApp because he thought it was not "politically neutral." [[link removed]]

* Facebook has allowed domestic workers to be sold via Instagram. [[link removed]]

* Facebook weighted the angry emoji as five times more powerful than a like on the platform despite warnings from their own integrity team. [[link removed]]

* Facebook knew the dangers of allowing ad microtargeting for politicians, but proceeded anyway. [[link removed]]

Here’s one key takeaway from the Facebook Papers: We’ve always known that Facebook poses a grave threat to society, democracy, and truth across the world. These papers confirm that and further expose the tip of a colossal iceberg of vast societal harm.

We’re doing all we can to hold Facebook accountable and elevate the voices harmed by their deceitful business practices. But we’re up against a company that can spend millions in a week without blinking an eye. We count on grassroots donors to provide us the foundation we need for successful campaigns that take on Big Tech: [[link removed]]
