Earlier this week Sudan’s military took power in a coup and dissolved the transitional government. These actions are against the democratic aspirations of the people of Sudan. The rapidly deteriorating situation is deeply concerning, and we join the international community in calling for the protection of civilians, including those bravely and nonviolently resisting the military takeover; immediate release of political detainees; restoration of the civilian-led transitional government and its associated institutions; and resumption of internet, telecommunications, and electricity services. The Elders have expressed their deep concern at the reported coup in Sudan, “a worrying blow to the progress Sudan has made in recent years in its transition from military dictatorship to a more accountable and representative form of government.” Read their press release ([link removed]) .
Alliance for Peacebuilding published a policy brief ([link removed]) exploring how the U.S. can implement its Strategy for Addressing the Root Causes of Migration in Central America through actions such as aligning with the Global Fragility Act and working with humility.
In an effort led by Anti-Slavery International, many of our partners, including Humanity United, joined more than 50 organizations in calling for COP26 to address climate change and modern slavery. Read the letter ([link removed]) delivered to COP26 President Rt Hon Alok Sharma.

John Paul Lederach, HU Senior Fellow, was featured ([link removed]) by Colombian newspaper, El Espectador, reflecting on his own lessons learned engaging in peacebuilding around the world and his perspective on the implementation of the Peace Accord in Colombia. A well-deserved recognition of the essential role journalists play in our world was given by the Nobel Committee. Maria Ressa of the Philippines and Dmitry Muratov of Russia were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize ([link removed]) earlier this month.
