In the Trump administration, using top government roles to make connections for post-government endeavors was simply business as usual.
A perfect example of that: former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
New documents obtained by CREW show Pompeo and his wife Susan going even further than previously known in using lavish, government-funded dinners to advance their own connections and interests. Read our new investigation here.
Of course, in an administration where the president funneled taxpayer money to his businesses, and where the former Treasury Secretary seems to have used official travel to make connections for his future investment fund, Pompeo’s behavior isn’t unique. But that doesn’t mean it’s not serious—Pompeo appears to have misused emergency funds, his staff appears to have attempted to mislead Congress about some expenditures, and he seems to have orchestrated the firing of the Inspector General who was investigating these serious ethical violations.
