Hi John,
The global south is trying to produce more vaccines - but Moderna is standing in the way.

This is ground-breaking. While negotiations to override pharmaceutical monopolies drag on at the World Trade Organization, some countries in the global south are starting to take matters into their own hands.

South Africa is trying to produce Moderna's vaccine in order to massively boost the supply of Covid-19 vaccine across the global south. But there’s a problem. Unless Moderna shares its recipe, it could still take scientists more than a year to figure out how it’s made. That means tens of thousands more unnecessary deaths.

Take action today to demand that Moderna shares its vaccine recipe with the WHO. There is no possible justification for withholding this information - other than Moderna’s desire to profiteer.

Backed by the World Health Organization, a facility in South Africa is starting to reverse engineer Moderna’s vaccine. Once they’ve worked out how to make it, they will be able to massively scale up vaccine production, and put an end to the scandalous levels of global vaccine inequality.

But they want to go even further. They are planning for the facility to become a ‘technology transfer hub’, where manufacturers from around the world can learn how to produce the vaccine themselves. It is precisely the kind of sharing and collaboration which should have characterised our response to the pandemic from the start.

But as things stand Moderna is refusing to share its recipe with the WHO hub. Although the scientists are going to continue their work, it will take longer - potentially years longer - for them to mimic the technology.

Moderna’s refusal is particularly obscene because the vaccine was researched entirely with public funding. It should always have been a people’s vaccine, but like so much vital medical knowledge today, it was privatised and monopolised. And Moderna has made a fortune off this research. While Moderna’s CEO has become a billionaire thanks to this vaccine, the company is projecting sales of $39 billion next year - making it one of the most profitable medicines in history.

The WHO hub would be a game changer. It would mean that manufacturers across the global south would understand how the revolutionary mRNA technology at the heart of Moderna’s vaccine works. Not only would this mean much greater production of Covid-19 vaccines in regions which currently have shockingly low vaccine rates. It would also mean this revolutionary technology - which could change how we deal with a range of diseases from malaria to HIV - could be widely shared and deployed around the world.

This could be the beginning of a radically different pharmaceutical system, geared to meeting need rather than filling the coffers of super rich executives and investors. And it’s been made possible thanks to the incredible movement of people around the world campaigning for a people’s vaccine.

But we need to speed it up. Join us in writing to Moderna today. They are already raking in unprecedented levels of profit. The least they can do is share the recipe.

Thank you

Nick Dearden

** Help ensure Covid-19 vaccines are available to everyone, everywhere
------------------------------------------------------------

It’s vitally important that Covid-19 vaccine patents are suspended during the pandemic, and for big pharma to share their know-how globally, as the best way of ensuring there are enough vaccines for everyone everywhere.

Regular gifts give us the long-term stability to plan effective campaigns and the flexibility to respond to crises like these.
