Dear John

Just days before the UN climate talks in Glasgow, a freedom of information request from Friends of the Earth Netherlands has revealed the UK government’s actions are out of line with globally accepted science on climate change.

Instead of aiming to keep global temperature rise below 1.5°C, it used a 2°C target when it decided to throw public money behind a massive gas project in Mozambique [1]. Even though it's preaching to the world about “keeping 1.5°C alive".

People and nature are in grave danger because rich countries like ours are backing projects like the one in Mozambique that would lead to catastrophic global heating. Will you add your name to tell wealthy nations to act urgently to protect lives and livelihoods from climate breakdown?

WHY FOSSIL FUELS NEED TO STAY IN THE GROUND
As you know, the ambition for the upcoming UN climate talks is to limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C. A recently published landmark study argued that if we want to hit that goal, then we’ve got to keep most fossil fuels in the ground.

Read our interview with the authors of the study – on what this means for the UK and projects like the Cambo oil field or the controversial new Cumbria coal mine.

WHY OFFSETTING IS A DANGEROUS DISTRACTION
Fossil fuels
Our new report shines a light on how the world’s biggest polluters are using offsetting to avoid reducing their emissions.

Offsetting means companies like Total and Heathrow get to carry on with business as usual (meaning: continue to wreck the climate...) while deceiving the public – and halting any real progress. Find out why offsetting is not the solution and what real climate action could look like.

WHO'S MOST AFFECTED BY CLIMATE BREAKDOWN?
Climate breakdown will impact us all in different ways, depending on who we are and where we live. Often, the communities that are being hit the hardest by the crisis are overlooked when we talk about it.

From the lives in limbo due to extreme weather in Bangladesh to the communities in the Niger Delta devastated by oil pollution, we look at the people and places feeling the worst effects of the climate crisis.

PLANNING SYSTEM REFORMS SET TO BE SCRAPPED

Following tireless campaigning from local groups and growing backlash from our supporters, news started to spread in September that the government will scrap damaging changes to the planning system that could’ve been catastrophic for people and the planet.

These changes would have taken power away from communities and local councils, and put the environment at risk.

Last year, thousands of you contacted your MPs and councillors asking them to tell the government to reconsider. And it looks like it worked! This is a huge triumph for people power.

That’s all for this month, we’ll be back with another update in November.
