Commercial health insurance markups over Medicare prices for physician services vary widely by specialty
Benchmarking private payment rates to Medicare prices could curb costs, but the effects will likely vary considerably by specialty. In our study, markups over Medicare prices across 17 specialties ranged from about 110 percent to 330 percent.
