Folks, before I served Colorado as senator, I served Denver’s students as school superintendent. I began to notice a pattern from one high schooler. Morning after morning, one student was falling asleep in class. It was clear he was exhausted and when I asked what was going on, he revealed that he’d been working the midnight shift at McDonald’s so his family had enough money to get by.

I spent years fighting for the Child Tax Credit because of stories like his and the fact that this is commonplace in our country. The monthly payments have helped one million Colorado kids and are on track to cut childhood poverty nearly in half this year alone. So, when I’m negotiating a further extension of the Child Tax Credit, I’m thinking of the countless kids nationwide that won’t have to work the midnight shift because of the CTC. I think of the kids whose parents could help with homework after school because they didn’t have to pick up an extra shift.

This is why I’m working hard to extend the CTC beyond its December expiration date, folks. I’ve seen firsthand how income inequality affects our kids, so this is personal. I’m running to meetings, making calls, and negotiating with the next generation in mind so I haven’t had time to focus on my re-election efforts despite all that’s at stake.

My team tells me that we’re coming up short of our fundraising goal this month but I know grassroots supporters like you have stepped up before. I appreciate every hard-earned dollar pitched into my campaign and hope you can donate before this month’s deadline.
