Great news! Today Gov. Hochul and the New York Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) rejected the Danskammer and NRG Astoria fracked gas plants! 🎉

We are so happy to have played our small part in this important victory as a member of the Stop Danskammer Coalition. THANK YOU to the dozens of groups and thousands of individuals who testified, rallied, made calls, submitted comments, wrote letters to newspapers, donated, and organized tirelessly against these plants for years. When ordinary people come together and fight, we win!

Now that we've helped stop some new fossil fuel plants, let's build a just transition to renewable energy! New York is still only at 6% wind and solar, and 23% hydro power, which is a long way from our legally-mandated target of 70% renewable energy by 2030. That’s why we’re fighting for the Build Public Renewables Act (A1466/S5453), which would enable the New York Power Authority to build publicly owned renewables in the most affordable, rapid, and just way possible!

The NY Build Public Renewables Act will: 

• Enable the New York Power Authority (NYPA) to build enough renewable energy to meet our climate targets 

• Retrofit all of New York’s public buildings with weatherization measures, electric heat pumps, and toxin remediation by 2030

• Enroll disadvantaged communities automatically in low-cost renewable energy

• Solicit community feedback on renewable siting decisions, energy efficiency programs, and more, democratizing the energy transition

• Create up to 51,000 new good, green, unionized jobs 

• Generate $90 billion in economic development funded by NYPA’s low-cost bond issuances, all without raising taxes or energy bills
