A proud Burqueña, Marianna Anaya was born and raised in Albuquerque's North Valley by her grandmother, mother, and alongside her little sister Cheyenne. With the support of her extended/chosen family, she earned her B.A. from the University of Texas at Austin in Mexican American Studies with a Focus in Education Policy. She went on to study Race & Ethnic Studies in Education at the University of California Los Angeles. Justice-minded, she centers New Mexico values in her work and in her lived experience as a proud, queer Chicana.

Marianna is a 2015 graduate of the Emerge NM program and has been on the board since. A former Emerge New Mexico president and run committee chair, she works behind the scenes to get women, women of color and queer communities from across New Mexico into the program, and during her spare time, helps them get elected to office. She formerly served on the boards of the NM Latino Education Task Force that helped bring forward the Yazzie/Martinez lawsuit for equity in NM education, and the NM chapter of GLSEN (Gay Lesbian Straight Education Network) where she earned her national certification as a curriculum trainer.

A former staffer to Congresswoman Michelle Lujan Grisham, union organizer with the Albuquerque Teachers Federation and Deputy Director at ProgressNow New Mexico, Marianna recently started her own business in communications and policy advocacy. Her current work focuses on reproductive justice, race equity, support for sexual assault survivors and advocacy for our LGBTQ community. A tía of two nephews, she dedicates her work to the next generation.
