John,
I'm Ja-Rei, and if you don't know me it's because my work here at Caring Across is usually behind the scenes.
But last night, with important deadlines for the Build Back Better Agenda fast approaching, I was out in DC to talk about street art we commissioned on a building near DC's popular Dupont Circle, just blocks from the White House.
Working with artists from Bell Visuals, we projected a message onto the building of our Care Can't Wait Coalition partner SEIU to spotlight the more than 5.4 million women missing from the workforce due to continued lack of caregiving support. The message read: “5.4 million women left the workforce in the first year of the pandemic. How many had to stop working to care for their loved ones? #CareCantWait.”
Congress is set to finalize a deal this week around the Build Back Better agenda after months of negotiations, and while reports are showing that some investments in child care and home and community-based care for aging adults and people with disabilities remain intact, paid leave is on the chopping block. All of these are essential components to care infrastructure, and to getting women back to work and reinvigorating the economy as the nation recovers from the pandemic.
The idea behind the projection is to get people talking about what Home and Community Based Services (HCBS), child care, and paid leave would mean for our families — and to pressure our elected officials to make sure those pieces are supported in the Build Back Better plan.
That's where you come in. Will you share our short video on social media using the hashtags #CareCantWait and #WorkingFamiliesNeedPaidLeave to help put pressure on Congress?

Sharing this video will help drive this important conversation in Washington DC, and will help us show our legislators why Care Can't Wait!
