Dear John,

This morning Ana Garcia-Ashley’s father, Jose Basilio Garcia, passed away in his home in the Dominican Republic. Ana was with him as he took his last breath. Papi, as he was lovingly known by his family, was born on June 14, 1930 in the Dominican Republic and emigrated from there to The Bronx more than fifty years ago with his wife, Dulce Marie Garcia, and their seven children.

Jose and Dulce returned to the DR just a few years ago to spend their final years near their extended family. (You may remember that Ana’s mother, Dulce, preceded him in death two years ago.) Because of COVID protocols, his funeral and burial will occur this afternoon.

As you can imagine, this is a sad time for our Executive Director and her family. Our thoughts and prayers are with them—especially Ana—as they mourn and celebrate the life of her father. Please feel free to offer your own words of comfort and encouragement. You can do that by responding to this email.

Best,
Cynthia Jarrold
